Shortlisted for 2021 International Literary Prize: Stardust

As a relatively new poet, one thing I’ve learned is that submitting new work to the most appropriate journals and contests makes a big difference. It takes time to figure out where one’s work might best fit. Gradually I’m getting better at this.

Earlier this year I was really intrigued to learning about Hammond House Publishing and its annual themed contest. Writers from around the world can enter the competition in four categories: screenplays, songwriting, poetry, and short stories.

When I saw the 2021 theme of Stardust, I felt an immediate sense of engagement as a strong thread in much of my poetry concerns astronomy, physics, and what it means to be human on a universal scale.

I was so excited today when I received an email about the 2021 shortlists for the competition, and discovered my name on the Poetry shortlist. I’m thrilled that my poem “Summer Lightning” has made this list.

The winners in each category will be announced on December 19th. Either way, a print publication that includes shortlisted poems will emerge from the competition, and that’s very exciting in itself.
